ABB
ABB (Asea Brown Boveri) was founded in 1988 and is headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland. It was formed through the merger of Sweden's ASEA and Switzerland's BBC Brown Boveri. The company primarily engages in power generation, power transmission and distribution, electromechanical equipment, and automation businesses.
In 1998, ABB acquired Alfa Laval Automation, a company specializing in process system control, and Elsag Bailey, officially entering the industrial automation industry. Prior to this, Elsag Bailey had recently completed acquisitions of Hartman & Braun, Taylor, Asea, and Kent. These acquisitions solidified ABB's position as a leading player in the automation industry. During this phase, ABB's core businesses were power transmission, power generation equipment, and industrial automation.
Between 1998 and 2008, ABB not only further improved its industrial automation control systems but also ushered in the era of automated industrial robots through a series of mergers and acquisitions. It acquired the automation control systems division of B&R, Eutech Engineering Solutions Ltd, which was engaged in engineering services, and Raffin Electric, which specialized in power automation.
From 2008 to the present, ABB has focused on digitalization and Industry 4.0 transformation, developing its own digital platform (ABB Ability™) and industrial collaborative robots. In 2017, it acquired GE's electrification business division, and in 2024, it acquired Swiss AI navigation company Sevensense and Siemens' switch and socket business in China.
Through years of continuous mergers and acquisitions and business development, ABB has transformed from a traditional power equipment supplier into a global leader in industrial automation and digitalization, forming its current business focus:
1. Industrial robots
IRB series, such as IRB 6700 and IRB 7600; YuMi collaborative robots, primarily used for precision assembly.
2. Power and automation technology
High-voltage direct current transmission (HVDC) and smart grid solutions.
3. Process Automation
PLC and DCS control systems for the oil, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries.
4. Motion Control and Motors
High-efficiency motors, variable frequency drives, and servo drive systems.
