Westinghouse

In 1886, George Westinghouse founded Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Pennsylvania, USA. After its establishment, the company rapidly expanded into various aspects of the power industry, including power generation equipment (turbines), power transmission and distribution equipment (transformers, switchgear), and the earliest electric lights and household appliances.

In the mid-20th century, Westinghouse became a leader in the commercialization of nuclear energy. It developed pressurized water reactor (PWR) technology and built the world's first commercial-scale pressurized water reactor nuclear power plant, establishing its dominant position in the nuclear energy sector.

Starting in the 1970s, Westinghouse Electric faced intense competition from Japanese companies, declining profits in its core manufacturing business, and significant financial pressure. In pursuit of higher profits, the company undertook a major strategic transformation, making large-scale acquisitions in the financial, broadcasting, and entertainment sectors, aiming to transition from a heavy-asset industrial conglomerate to a light-asset services and media group. While these measures temporarily resolved the financial crisis, they also caused Westinghouse Electric to lose its core strengths—engineering technology and manufacturing capabilities.

In 1997, the CBS division was spun off from Westinghouse Electric, and the remaining industrial assets, including nuclear power and government projects, were restructured into Westinghouse Electric Company. In 2006, Japanese company Toshiba, eager to acquire advanced nuclear power technology, acquired Westinghouse Electric. In 2017, massive losses from nuclear power construction projects directly led to the collapse of Westinghouse Electric, which filed for bankruptcy protection in 2017. In 2018, Westinghouse's nuclear power business was acquired by Canadian asset management firm Brookfield Business Partners, becoming an independent company focused on nuclear fuel, technical services, and new reactor design.

Today, Westinghouse is no longer a unified entity; its brand exists in various unrelated fields through licensing agreements:

1. Nuclear energy business (Westinghouse Electric Company), owned by Brookfield, which inherited the original nuclear power technology, nuclear fuel, and service operations.

2. Brand licensing, such as home appliances, lighting, power accessories, small appliances, and other consumer products, is all licensed by different companies.
