SIEMENS
Siemens started out as a telegraph company. During the two world wars, Siemens, like many other German industrial giants, was involved in military production and underwent dissolution and reconstruction after the wars. Throughout its development, Siemens has adhered to the philosophy of focusing on its core business, strengthening its weaknesses, and exploring new areas, conducting multi-faceted strategic mergers and acquisitions, and gradually becoming the technology giant it is today.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Siemens acquired automation company Texas Instruments and its control systems business, solidifying its position in automation, healthcare, and lighting sectors. In 2004, it acquired Bonus Energy, entering the wind turbine manufacturing sector. In 2007, it acquired UGS, a US company, gaining access to top-tier industrial software suites including NX (CAD/CAE/CAM) and Teamcenter (PLM), thereby acquiring core capabilities in digital twins and product lifecycle management. During this phase, Siemens began divesting traditional businesses to focus on the digital industry, smart infrastructure, and energy transition.
In 2013, it divested Osram, exiting the consumer lighting market. In 2014, it sold its 50% stake in Bosch-Siemens Home Appliances to Bosch, completely exiting the home appliance sector. In 2017, it merged its wind power business (Siemens Wind Power) with Gamesa to form Siemens Gamesa, becoming a global leader in wind power. In 2020, it spun off its energy business (including gas turbines and power transmission) and merged it with Siemens Gamesa, listing it independently as Siemens Energy.
In 2021, it acquired Supplyframe, a smart platform covering the entire chain of electronic product design, procurement, and manufacturing, strengthening its digital industrial ecosystem.
Siemens' current main product lines include:
1. Automation systems (PLC, HMI, IPC), such as the SIMATIC S7-1200/1500 series PLC, industrial computers, touchscreens, etc., which are widely used in automotive manufacturing, food processing, and semiconductor production.
2. Servo drive systems, such as the SINAMICS S200 series servo drive systems, variable frequency drives, motors, etc.
3. Industrial software such as Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) platforms.
4. Smart infrastructure, building automation, energy management, fire safety and security, lighting control systems, etc.
