Function & Application

The ABB VP800 valve positioner adds turbine valve control functionality to System 800xA or any other controller with a Profibus interface. It is designed to regulate hydraulic actuators via servo valves or I/H converters. Typical applications include driving dual-coil integral servo mechanisms and using single or redundant LVDTs, including positioning of steam turbine throttle and control valves, and gas turbine fuel valves. The VP800 valve positioner can be connected to one or more ROM810 relay output modules, depending on the specific requirements of each application. The VP800 valve positioner includes two position feedback inputs, two digital inputs (24/48VDC), dual-coil servo outputs, and four relay outputs. The VP800 valve positioner consists of three main components:

  • The CPM810 general-purpose processor module, primarily used to execute the valve positioning software algorithm and communicate with the main controller via Profibus DP.
  • The VPM810 valve position module, primarily used to receive and digitize field inputs, generates valve positioning outputs.
  • The TBU810 terminal base unit houses the CPM810 and VPM810 modules and provides power, field I/O, and communication terminals.

ABB CPM810 Common Processor

 

The CPM810 is a common processor module in ABB's 800 series turbine valve positioners. The CPM810 general-purpose processor module features a built-in Profibus interface, non-proprietary communication, and enables a truly open architecture for integrated master stations and line redundancy. The CPM810 processor module provides automatic mapping, converting flow demand into valve position demand to achieve linear changes in turbine steam or gas flow. Automatic valve testing can be provided upon request from the master controller to ensure proper operation of electronic and hydraulic components. Automatic calibration of the position feedback device, including LVDT voltage range and demodulator gain, is also provided.

The VP800 valve positioner, composed of the CPM810, VPM810, and TBU810, offers three operating modes:

  1. I/H converter mode, which drives the linear positioning device (I/H converter) by directly and linearly mapping the demand signal to the voltage output using an open-loop control scheme (no feedback).
  2. The inner and outer loop modes are suitable for applications with two cascaded, non-mechanically connected control elements (some servo-operated pilot valve devices). In this mode, the cascaded PI control loop utilizes two feedback devices (for the pilot valve and steam valve positions) to form a closed-loop control system.
  3. The manual mode allows the operator to directly control the hydraulic actuator in the event of a communication failure with the main controller. In this mode, the operator can issue hardwired lifting commands to the VP800.
