The Woodward 505 digital governor is designed for steam/gas turbines with single-range or partial-range actuators. Released versions include 8200-1300, 8200-1301, and 8200-1302.

The 505 controller is designed to control single-actuator or dual-actuator (partial-range) steam turbines (extraction steam turbines require the 505XT version). The 505 controller is field-configurable, allowing a single design to be used in a variety of different control applications. The 505 can be configured to operate as a standalone unit or in conjunction with a field-distributed control system. The 505 controller comprises five PID controllers that influence the turbine inlet steam flow demand: a speed/load PID controller, an auxiliary PID controller, an auxiliary 2-PID controller, and a cascaded PID controller. The interaction between these PID controllers varies depending on the 505 configuration.

 

 

Operator Control Panel
The 505 is a field-configurable turbine controller integrated with an Operator Control Panel (OCP). Its front panel features a comprehensive graphical operator control panel display and keyboard. This display is used for configuring the 505, performing online program adjustments, and operating the turbine/system.

 

Communication
The 505 controller can communicate directly with the field distributed control system (DCS) and/or human-machine interface (HMI) control panel via a Modbus communication port. A serial port supports RS-232 or RS-485 communication using ASCII or RTU MODBUS transmission protocols. Two Ethernet ports can also be used to transmit the same information between the 505 controller and the field DCS.

Operating Modes
The 505 controller has three normal operating modes: configuration mode, service mode, and run mode.

  1. Configuration Mode – This mode is used to select the options required to configure a specific turbine application. In this mode, the controller forces the hardware into an I/O lockout state, meaning all outputs will be active, all relays will be de-energized, and all analog output signals will have zero current. Once the controller is configured, it is generally not necessary to re-enter program mode.
  2. Calibration Mode – This mode is used to calibrate, tune, and adjust relevant parameters when the equipment is off or during turbine operation. A password is required to log in to this mode.
  3. Operation Mode – This mode represents the typical state of normal operation of the control system and turbine. Operation mode is used throughout the entire operation process of the turbine, from startup to shutdown.

Additional Functions
The 505 also provides the following functions: first trip indication for alarm and trip events (with RTC timestamp), 10 external DI trip inputs, 10 external alarm inputs, critical speed avoidance (3 speed ranges), automatic start sequence (cold start and warm start, with temperature input option), dual speed/load dynamics, zero speed detection, overspeed trip peak speed indication, inter-unit isochronous load sharing (with DSLC-2 controller), feedforward loop, acceleration protection during initial startup, remote droop control, and frequency dead zone.
