Function & Application

The DS200PTCTG1B is a current and voltage transformer circuit board within the GE Mark V gas turbine control system. Its primary function is to convert high-amplitude signals from field-mounted voltage and current transformers into low-voltage signals that the control system can safely recognize, while simultaneously providing high-voltage electrical isolation for the system. The DS200PTCTG1B transformer board converts external high-voltage and high-current signals in real-time into low-voltage signals—specifically ±10V or 4-20mA—that are compatible with the control system. Through a combination of opto-isolation and transformer isolation, the board effectively prevents high voltages and large currents from damaging the controller. Furthermore, the board employs optocoupler isolation for discrete signals—such as fault trip commands—ensuring complete electrical separation between the control and protection circuits. In addition to processing and transmitting primary signals, the DS200PTCTG1B transformer board typically provides auxiliary input/output channels for monitoring signals such as DC bus current or potentiometer feedback. The transformer circuitry processes voltage waveforms received from the Voltage Transformers (PTs) and can also generate synchronization signals required for the precise triggering of Silicon-Controlled Rectifier (SCR) bridges.

Via an onboard JKK ribbon cable, the DS200PTCTG1B transformer board connects to the TCCB board to facilitate functions such as AC/DC power conversion, digital signal filtering, and open-circuit detection and alarming. The signal allocation for the JKK interface is as follows:

  • Channels 1–8: Differential analog signals (±10V) conditioned from the PT/CT inputs.
  • Channels 9–12: Auxiliary I/O signals.
  • Channels 13–16: Square-wave pulse signals for phase-locked synchronization, used for SCR triggering.
  • Channels 17–20: Board status feedback signals (read-back), such as "Power OK" and fault alarms.
  • Remaining Pins: ±15V DC power supply and digital/analog signal lines.

Application Cases and Experience

  1. Power Plant Excitation Regulation and Converter Control: In GE EX2100 or Mark V excitation systems, the PTCTG1B is responsible for acquiring generator terminal voltage and stator current signals. This facilitates the control system in maintaining appropriate voltage levels in a timely manner and enables rapid field suppression (de-excitation) in the event of a fault. In GE wind turbine generator systems, this board plays a crucial role in enabling precise Low Voltage Ride-Through (LVRT) control and power factor regulation.
  2. Turbine Startup and Protection: During the unit startup and grid synchronization process, the DS200PTCTG1B can be utilized to monitor voltage and current anomalies in real time.
  3. Common Failure Modes: 1) Isolation transformer overheating. When the input current remains at the full-scale 5A limit for extended periods—particularly in the presence of high harmonic content—it can easily lead to internal overheating, resulting in erratic measurement readings or the burnout of the TCCB's input channels. 2) Poor contact in auxiliary channel jumpers. After prolonged use, these connections may degrade and require periodic inspection and maintenance. 3) Loose JKK ribbon cable plugs. Vibrations from the rack-mounted cooling fans may cause the edge-locking latches to fracture, leading to intermittent signal loss; this issue can be diagnosed by gently shaking the ribbon cable by hand while observing the status LEDs of the corresponding channels.
