The 9905-971 is a 16-channel discrete input module from the Woodward LINKnet product family, designed primarily for the precise monitoring of digital signals from field equipment. It is compatible with the LINKnet network, allowing for seamless integration into distributed I/O architectures. The 9905-971 is an earlier LON-based LINKnet module; its upgraded replacement is the CANopen-based LINKnet HT module (model 8200-1204). However, MicroNet systems utilizing CPU040, CPU060, or NT processors can continue to use the 9905-971 without requiring an upgrade.

Relationship with the 9905-970 and 9905-972
All three modules belong to the Woodward LINKnet 9900 series and communicate with the NetCon controller via the same LINKnet network; however, they differ significantly in signal type, channel count, and functional purpose. The 9905-971 accepts discrete (switch) signals and features 16 input channels. The 9905-970 is an analog input module that accepts 100Ω RTD signals and has 6 input channels. The 9905-972 is an analog output module with 6 output channels, providing 4–20 mA analog signals. For instance, in a steam turbine control system, the 9905-970 reads analog sensor signals, the 9905-971 monitors valve or switch status, and the 9905-972 outputs 4–20 mA control signals to actuators; these modules work in concert to perform field signal acquisition and control output tasks.
