The 5501-469 CPU module is a CPU module in the Woodward MicroNet™ 040 series. The MicroNet control series can be used to control the process flow of mechanical equipment such as gas turbines, steam turbines, and diesel engines. The 5501-469 controller offers a variety of powerful functions, including high-speed control, system sequencing, auxiliary system control, surge control, monitoring and alarms, and field control. To adapt to different field requirements, the 5501-469 is available in both simplex and triple-module redundancy configurations. In Simplex systems, the CPU040 was replaced by the Pentium CPU in 1999 and by the CPU5200 in 2005. In TMR systems, the CPU040 was replaced by the CPU5200 in early 2009.
Each Simplex MicroNet controller contains one CPU module, which is located in the first I/O slot of the MicroNet chassis. When the reset switch is set to the "Run" position, the 5501-469 CPU module will perform diagnostic tests and then run the application. There is a PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card) slot on the front panel of the CPU. The PCMCIA slot is used to download application files to the CPU module. The CPU module has an internal battery that powers the real-time clock when the controller is powered off. During normal operation, the onboard circuitry keeps the battery charged. Once fully charged, the battery can power the clock for at least three months even when the controller is powered off. The real-time clock has a resolution of 10 milliseconds. The 5501-469 CPU module has an RS-232 serial port on the front. This communication port is non-isolated and can only be connected to devices with isolated serial ports. Shielded cables and serial port isolators/converters are required to avoid electromagnetic interference (EMI) noise and ground loops associated with PC connections and typical industrial environments.
