Common Module Installation Methods
Time:Dec 15,2025
Modules can be installed in various ways, but the main methods include DIN rail mounting, panel/wall mounting, slot/backplate mounting, bolt/flange mounting, snap-on/suction cup mounting, and rack mounting. In actual projects, combinations of multiple mounting methods are often used. For example, a control system might include: rack-mounted servers, DIN rail-mounted PLCs and relays, panel-mounted touchscreens and frequency converters, and bolt-mounted motors.
1. DIN Rail Mounting
DIN rail mounting is the mainstream and standard installation method in industrial control fields (such as PLCs, circuit breakers, power supplies, I/O modules, and electricity meters). This mounting method offers convenient disassembly and reassembly, saves space, facilitates expansion, and provides good ventilation and heat dissipation. It is suitable for various industrial electrical and electronic modules conforming to the DIN EN 60715 standard. Various rail types are available, such as the commonly used TH35 type (35mm top-cap type rail), the TH15 type (15mm top-cap type rail) for small equipment, and the G type rail for terminal blocks.

2. Panel/Wall-Mounted Mounting
This mounting method involves directly screwing the equipment to the back panel, front panel, or wall of the control cabinet. It offers a robust installation and is suitable for heavier, larger, or non-standard-sized equipment, such as industrial computers (PCs), high-power frequency converters, servo drives, touchscreens (HMIs), and some power supplies and controllers.
3. Slot/Backplane Mounting
The equipment is inserted as a card into a motherboard or chassis with bus connectors (such as PCI, PCIe, VPX, or custom backplanes). This mounting method offers reliable connections, strong expandability, fast bus communication speeds, and good vibration resistance. It is mainly suitable for function cards (data acquisition cards, motion control cards), communication modules, CompactPCI/PXI systems, and high-performance embedded systems within industrial PCs.
4. Bolt/Flange Mounting
The equipment is directly bolted to the mechanical structure or base using its own mounting holes or flanges. This mounting method is extremely robust and can withstand heavy loads, strong vibrations, and impacts. It is suitable for large motors, heavy sensors (such as encoders), valve positioners, and large heat sinks. 5. Clip/Suction Cup Mounting: Secured using plastic clips, Velcro, or vacuum suction cups. This mounting method is extremely convenient, requires no drilling, and does not damage the mounting surface. Suitable for small consumer electronics, home IoT devices, and cable management accessories for temporary wiring.
6. Rack Mounting
Equipment is designed to fit standard rack widths (e.g., 19 inches) and is secured to a server rack using lugs or rails. For example, Bently Nevada's mechanical protection products primarily use rack mounting. Rack mounting offers high space utilization, a neat and aesthetically pleasing appearance, and unified airflow. Suitable for servers, switches, routers, audio/video equipment, rack-mounted industrial PCs, UPS modules, etc.
