ABB REG216 Generator & Generator Transformer Protection

ABB's REG216 product family is designed to protect generators and group transformers. This protection system, through a combination of software libraries and hardware modules, can be easily adapted to the size of the primary system and the required protection scheme.
The REG216 hardware consists of two main components, physically isolated from each other and connected via standard prefabricated shielded cables:
• The primary system interface (current transformers, voltage transformers, and auxiliary relays), which provides DC isolation and electromagnetic interference protection;
• The parallel bus and associated electronics (such as analog inputs and data processors for signal conditioning and processing).
All available units exchange data and monitor each other via the B448C parallel bus. This protection system is data-bus-based, and most functions utilize digital signal processing, including signal conditioning, analog and digital inputs, A/D conversion, processing, and signal outputs. The parallel bus and electronics utilize a plug-in design and are mounted in a standard 19-inch 6U (1U = 44.45 mm) equipment rack. This equipment rack is organized into 21 standard partitions.

System components include:
1. Device rack 216MB66/216MB68 and parallel bus B448C
Main features of the parallel bus B448C:
• Based on the IEEE P 896 specification (future bus)
• Time multiplexing of addresses and data (16 bits)
• Asynchronous data transmission with handshake
• Integrity check of each data exchange
• Up to 32 master units with the same status and active bus access
• All electronic units share a common internal 24 V auxiliary power supply; redundant 24 V power supply is possible.

2. Processing unit 216VC62a
• 80486DX-2 type 32-bit processor
• Application software stored in Flash EPROM
• Operating data stored in RAM
• Settings in non-volatile Flash EPROM
• Passive RS-423 interface for PC operation
• Connection to the station controller and message transmission
• Clock synchronization for time stamping of events
• Non-volatile event and interference memory (gold capacitor buffering)
• Space requirements: Two rack partitions.

3. Analog input unit 216EA62
• Six groups of 24 inputs sampled simultaneously
• Sampling frequency of 600 (720) Hz at a power supply frequency of 50 (60) Hz
• Space requirements: Two rack partitions.

4. Digital Output Unit 216AB61
• 32 outputs for controlling relays in the Output Auxiliary Relay Assembly
• Short-circuit protection
• Front-panel LEDs to indicate active relays
• Space requirement: One rack partition.

5. Trip Output and Binary Input Unit 216DB61
• 8 outputs for bipolar control of the auxiliary trip relays
• Monitor output amplifier
• 16 digital inputs for receiving signals from the Input Auxiliary Relay Assembly (two per input, for external enable and disable tripping)
• Active outputs and inputs are indicated by LEDs
• Front-panel space requirement: One rack partition.

6. Auxiliary DC Power Supply Units 216NG61, 216NG62, and 216NG63
• 36 to 312 V DC input versions
• 24 V DC output, 150 W
• Short-circuit and overload-protected outputs
• Parallel connection for increased ratings
• Parallel connection for redundancy (two outputs)
• Space requirement: three rack sections.

All protection functions of the REG216 operate using sampled primary system voltage and current. The analog input unit has a sampling rate of 12 times per cycle at the rated power system frequency, with a dynamic range of 15 bits. All further signal processing is performed digitally. This ensures universal applicability, high accuracy, and long-term stability. Digital filters effectively suppress DC and harmonic components, thus preventing interference.
The protection system is configured and controlled via a serial interface to a personal computer. The console is menu-driven and allows for parameter and log settings, measurement value display, event display, event confirmation, and printout, as well as fault log data.

Through the collaborative sampling of this series of electronic units, the REG216 system occupies a significant position in the field of generator and transformer protection.
