Field Notes on the 133819-02 RTD/TC Module

We have been getting a few inquiries about the 133819-02 lately. Here is a practical look at what this module does and what to watch out for.

What It Is

The 133819-02 is a non-isolated I/O module for the Bently Nevada 3500/61 temperature monitor. It provides six channels of temperature input. You can connect RTDs or thermocouples to it. The module reads the temperature, compares it against alarm setpoints, and sends data to the monitoring system.

The 3500/60 and 3500/61 are functionally identical. The only difference is that the 3500/61 includes a recorder output for each channel. The 133819-02 is the I/O module that supports those recorder outputs.

Non-Isolated vs Isolated

The 133819-02 is the non-isolated version. The input channels share a common reference. It works fine for most industrial applications.

The isolated version provides 250 volts of isolation between channels. That helps when sensors are far apart or in areas with different ground potentials. The non-isolated version costs less and is simpler to wire.

One useful feature: you can mix RTD and thermocouple inputs on the same module. Some channels can read RTDs while others read thermocouples.

The Recorder Output

The recorder output is the only feature that distinguishes the 3500/61 from the 3500/60. Each channel gets a dedicated analog output. This output is typically used to drive a chart recorder or remote display.

In older plants, chart recorders are still common. They provide a visual trend that operators can glance at without pulling up a screen. The recorder output on the 133819-02 makes that possible.

Installation and Wiring

The 133819-02 is a half-height module. The external termination version uses terminal strips for field wiring. The internal version routes everything through the backplane connectors.

One detail that trips people up is termination type. If you order internal termination, you need the corresponding internal termination block. The external version uses standard terminal strips. Mixing them does not work.

When wiring RTDs, pay attention to lead length. The module compensates for lead resistance, but only up to a point. Thermocouples require the correct wire type.

Redundancy and TMR

In a TMR configuration, you need to install three temperature monitors next to each other. The system votes on the readings from all three and uses the majority value.

The 133819-02 works in TMR setups. This approach prevents a single module failure from taking down the whole temperature monitoring function.

Common Configuration Mistakes

One issue is forgetting to set the sensor type in software. The module supports multiple sensor types, but the configuration must match what is physically wired.

Alarm setpoints are another area where mistakes happen. If setpoints are not entered correctly, you may get nuisance alarms or miss a real problem.

Recorder output scaling also needs attention. If scaling does not match the recorder's input range, the chart will show incorrect values.

Final Thoughts

The 133819-02 is a straightforward module. It does not have the complexity of a vibration monitor or the communication functions of a gateway card. It reads temperatures, compares them to limits, and provides recorder outputs.

Temperature monitoring is often the first indicator of a developing problem. The 133819-02 gives you those readings reliably. If you are ordering this module, check the termination type and agency approval option. Those choices affect how it connects to your system.
